World Positional Ranking of The Eras

Ranking players by position required at least 3.5 international-class seasons within five seasons considered so the number of qualified players are simply different between positions and eras. The first half of decade count from the last digit 0 to 4 and the second half 5  to 9. However, it allows margin +/- 1 in only case of continuity of performance. The limitation of such a list is some of performances were conducted at the border between eras. For example, Cha Bum Kun reached world-class half of season in 1979 and he played in Korean league before that time so he is not qualified for the 1970s. He also achieved twice international-class seasons in each of half during 1980s and not qualified for each as well.

  1. What should Raí is included in the first half of the 90s. His performance in São Paulo was spectacular. It is indisputable.

    1. I didn't name him because of his failure in the 1994 World Cup. But still, if I name Ortega in the second half 1990s, Rai should have a place in the list as well when the compensation of his great performance in both domestic and international club is enough.

  2. Soren Lerby and Morten Olsen in 80s?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Both players was undoubtedly one of the top players in any specific year and they’re just below the limited line of my standardization.

  3. i dont know how Luis Fernandez can be better then Soren Lerby? Morten Olsen is a true legend in 80s. Big captain of "danish dynamite" and Anderlecht. Maybe after Beckenbauer and Sammer, best libero. Ciao!

    ReplyDelete
  4. As for the players' characteristics Ferrnandez and Lerby were equally good runners, like speed and jump games and both a strong mentality. Lerby was certainly a much more universal player. He was more agile than Luis. He had better technique and passing game. He was also an aggressive player, and the player with the better a shot from Fernandez. Much more dangerous is Lerby was also the opponent's goal. When it is added to the Lerby won nine national championships (Ajax, Bayern, PSV), several national cup and league champions 1988th Fernandez won only one French championship and two cups. When it is adding to the Lerby been ranked higher in the elections, "France Football", I do not see any segment in favor of Fernandez, except that he was the champion of Europe with the French national team.

  5. no explanation why Fernandez is better than Lerby?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Lerby achieved his best year in 1986 refer to coincidence between Kicker and Ballon'Dor ranking for his world-class status. There is no seasonal rating of L.Fernandez found but at least he won 1985 French player of the year which could be considered in world-class when considers competitive standard between French players during mid-80s. Although Luis Fernandez is more achieved in National Team, Lerby was an important player to help PSV won European Treble (Even PSV in 1988 is one of the worst champions ever when it penalty shootout 3 matches in row). I saw Luis Fernandez was a better defensive player while Lerby is more versatile in advanced role. In conclusion, I agree to name Lerby in the list but I need to study more to conclude the result between this comparison. I'll return to inform you.

  7. O.k. Thank you! But Lerby was already a big star from the period when he played for Ajax, together with Frank Arnesen.

  9. No place for Morten Olsen and John Angelo Hansen?

    ReplyDelete
  10. John Angelo Hansen is one of 12 foreign players who entered the Juventus "hall of fame". In the early eighties, Morten Olsen is considered one of the best defenders in the world. 6.place - "World Soccer" 1984. Best central defender in Europe 1983. I think it is irresponsible not to include these two players in this category.

    1. Morten Olsen became a libero at 1982 and he finished third place in the 1984 Belgian Golden shoe with fifth place in 1985 although the awards was biased for Belgian player.
As I check he finished between 15th - 20th Ballon'Dor in three years (1983,1984 and 1986). I think it would be fine if I name him in the first half 1980s. Anyway, I don't think John Angelo Hansen is consistent enough to be made in the list.

  13. John Hansen in six and a half years in Italy scoring 139 goals in Serie A. He was not a striker. He was a forward. He was the top scorer of Serie A, the top scorer of the only international tournament which is played, Olympics 1948 Serie A (214-139), danish league (114-113), danish national team (8-10). Total-(336-262). Impressive numbers for someone who is not the first attacker.

  14. Do you think for Coppens and Lenstra, and special Wilkes and Nyers are better players with better careers than Hansen? Coppens and Lenstra without trophies, Wilkes with one spanish cup. Nyers with one serie A. Season 44/45 he played 3 match with one goal. Season after, half of the season went to Servette. Season 53/54 for Inter same, for season 56/57(barcelona) has not played any match. So that it remains one serie A. For seven and half season i seria A scored 153 goals including about 40 from penalty. And was a striker.

    1. I'm not serious on trophy achievement since this list is considered only individual performance. Wiles and Lenstra was researched by Dutch university as one of their highest peak performer ever but they are known to be lack of an important opportunity internationally.

Coppens, he was very consistent in that period with impressive scoring ratio in twice seasons (more than 1).

In case of Nyers would be very interesting. I tend to agree John Angelo Hansen is slightly advantageous since the prime of Nyers is between the late 1940s and early 1950s by which is a defect of the kind of this list which is clearly bordered in range of period.

    INFO:

Former Danish player, an offensive allrounder and genius, but also very problematic guy. Bronee was one of the most talented players ever to play in Italy, famous for his skills, footwork, fantasy and vision, but also notorious for his contoversal behaviour, lack of discipline and agoistic attitude. Had fantastic ball control and dribbling, sweet touch, strong shot and genial intuition, used to come very deep to help in defence, sometimes on side back position. But he lacked consistency and didn't always had will for playing, sometimes he'd just walk on the pitch uninterested for game. Bronée started his senior career with Copenhagen clubs Boldklubben 1893 (B 93) and Handelsstandens Boldklub (HB). He moved to Østerbro Boldklub (ØB), where he formed a fearsome attacking partnership with Karl Aage Præst. With 26 goals in the 1945-46 Danish 2nd Division season, Bronée helped ØB win promotion for the top-flight Danish 1st Division. Bronée got his debut for the Danish national team in September 1945, where he scored the first goal in a 5-1 victory against Norway. He was the topscorer of the 1946-47 Danish championship with 21 goals in 18 games, as ØB finished in fourth place in their 1st Division debut season. Explodes in the French team of Nancy. In 1950 he was hired for 40 million lire from Palermo Prince Raimondo Lanza di Trabia, discovered during a pleasure trip during the match in Nancy Nancy-Grenoble. He soon comes into conflict with the coach of the Rosanero Gipo Viani. Off the court he had an unruly character, which soon causes him to dislike in society. Even for this game in rosanero only for two seasons (1950-1951 and 1951-1952) total of 70 appearances and scoring 22 goals. His career continued in Rome, but here's his quarrelsome character creates some problems. After a Roma-Inter between him and his teammate Arcadio Venturi, there is a dispute which culminated with the launch of a shoe on the face of a leader of respect, Dr. Campilli, the son of a minister. Bronée is taken out, thus putting an end to his adventure Romanist. In 1954 he arrived at Juventus, where he remained a season total of 29 appearances and 11 goals. In the next championship goes to conclude his Italian interlude in the ranks of Novara. Closes Career with Rødovre and B 93. Helge Bronee died on 03/06/1999.

  19. Diego Costa best striker of the first half 2010s?? Are you serious?

You can put Suarez on striker rather than forward and Lewandowski deserves to be ahead of Diego Costa.
And where are Cavani (three season at 23 goals or more in Serie A), Aguero (2 times champion and one golden boot), but also Higuain and Benzema.
There were all best than Diego Costa (just 2 good seasons of 5) for 2010-2015.

    1. I admit I was too hurry to finish this list. Now Aguero and Cavani has been added. I see it is very similar level between both of them and also Lewandowski. Anyway, the rank has been decided. Suarez s really not target striker. He often run with the ball and made a number of assists.

-How is any defender above Ramos in the same period?
..He was World Champion and MVP according to Castrol Ratings(2010)
..He was included in the FIFA Team of the Year in 2011
..He was basically the best defender on the planet this year by being named La Liga Best Defender, UEFA Team of the Year , ESM Team of the Year(for consistency) and won the EURO being named MVP according to castrol ratings. Also highest defender at the Ballon d'Or(you should name him such in you annual series)(2012)
..Once again La Liga Best Defender , UEFA Team of the Year and FIFA Team of the Year(2013)
..Once again La Liga Best Defender , UEFA Team of the Year and FIFA Team of the Year.
Apart from Lahm , no one is close in cumulative performance

-Xabi Alonso was definetly better than Schweisteinger and Essien in the The Second Half 2000s and The First Half 2010s respectively.
He was the best central midfielder in 2010 and ranked in top 10 Ballon d'Or
He was named in FIFA Team of the Year in 2011 and was again considered the best in the world in his position
He was again included in FIFA Team of the Year(above the likes of Pirlo) and La Liga best midfielder above Xavi having an incredible season
2013 was a average year by his standards but he was again instrumental for La Decima in 2014.
This is out of hte timeline but Xabi even after he left Real and joined Bastian as team mate proved better and recieved better overall ratings than Bastian. He has been a incredible player and every team he ever played and the best at his role in his era.

    1. The most number of IFFHS world best goalkeeper awards could not help Casillas to be number one because he did almost nothing in the 2013 - 2014 La Liga season due to his reserved player status. For Sergio Ramos, I consent to revise as he is much more successful in NT career.

Xabi Alonso ? Essien was seen to be more dominant in central midfield area. Xabi was a better creator but I think he is too static and slow. Schweisteinger was an indispensable player for Bayern and Germany in their glory era. I think Xabi is not even a true competitor.

  24. Paul Breitner seems very low for his eras compared to his place in the hall of fame about the same as Falcao and considerably higher than Marco Tardelli yet here Paul is 6th and 7th while Falcao is 1st twice and Marco 2nd and 4th in the same eras. This does not seem to make sense.

    1. I'm not refused this work has its weak point. The era is split into 1st and 2nd half so the players who achieved the peak in overlapped era is extremely disadvantageous liked Breitner who achieved world-class between late 1970s to 1980s.

  25. So when did Falcao and Marco Tardelli achieve their peak so this does not affect them?

    Wheres kimmich?
Alves is hopelessly overrated for second half of 2010s. He has not been world class since 2015. He dod not deserve team of the year awards in serie a or ligue 1. In both years he was only half starter to lichsteiner and then meunier and his form was very inconsistent.
Verratti should be listed. He has consistently been world class at PSG.

    1. Handanovic is best at 1st half 2010s but he was unsuccessful internationally.
Alves is selected FIFPro World XI 3 times and should be enough for qualification.
Veratti is also not successful in international club.
Kimmich has just played for just 2 full domestic seasons. Before that, he played only half of season in two years.

  28. I think goal keeper fpr second half og 2010s needs some changes. Oblak should be in the list. He has been best la liga keeper for last 5 years. Much more consistent than courtois and longer at high level than allison. Why is Buffon first? His level has decreased in last 5 years somewhat.

  35. Hello master! Maybe take another look at the qualities and careers of some players. Jimmy Crabtree - as good as Howard Spencer. Jozsef Fogl - I would say a little worse than Karoly Fogl. Harald Hansen - one of the best defensive players in the first half of 1900. Antonin Hojer - the main Czech authority. Karl Braunsteiner - one of the greatest potentials. Died prematurely in the war. Dan Doyle - Scottish defense legend. Gunnar Andersen - back in 1941, he was mentioned in that "Kicker" as one of the best in his position. Asbjorn Halvorsen is perhaps the biggest name I will mention here. Hans Kalb also represented something in his time. The Gyula Biro was also very recognized in its time, as was Eugen Kipp. Arthur Bridgett was one of the best wingers in England in that first football stage. Maybe Luigi Cevenini deserved not to be forgotten, as did Alex Young. Michael Rohde - his career lasted a long time, with periods of crisis. The beginning and end of his career was very impressive. His 4 goals for B 93 in a 4-3 win against English champions Huddersfield were the crown of his career. Probably Antonin Janda and Felix Sesumga also deserved certain merits. Vivan Woodward was an amateur, but still one of the best footballers in the world. Louis Van Hege was the same well-known and recognized name as Jan Kosek. Carl Skomar Hansen was marked at the time when he was bought by Glasgow Rangers as the best footballer outside the British Isles. He scored 3 goals in his debut in the Rangers ’3-1 win. The Scots call him the "Great Little Dane." He was small. A broken leg stopped a potentially great career. I know that at that time Spain was not a great power, but still Rafael Pichichi meant something in his time, as did Josef Uridil. I will end with 3 big English names that were extremely popular in their time: Nevill Cobbold, Tinsley Lindley and Gilbert Oswald Smith. By doing so, I reviewed footballers who were born in the 19th century. Greeting!

    ReplyDelete
  36. OK I have added some of these names. I think Vivian Woodward is not deserved. You can see he played in second division too many seasons and his scoring record in club career is average. I am also not rate English players in amateur era.

    1. Kochees,I would like to have your opinion on my top 100 central defender. Ake Johansson played in only Swedish league with Norkopping. The team never got success in international club and he also missed 1958 World Cup. Anyway, I see many rates him so high and even pick him as the best Swedish central defender ever. Do you think he is better than Glenn Hysen (who I rate at 100th currently) ? I also think Cor Van De Hart has no international highlight as well but he is named in top 100.

Another one is Aldair. Would you also rate him higher than Glenn Hysen ?

      Delete
  38. I'm honored that you're asking for my opinion. Yes, it is very difficult to judge between these four. I have tried in this way: a) QUALITY - 1. Van der Hart (no doubt, based on available information, 2. Johansson, 3. Hysen, 4. Aldair (his slowness was crucial), b) SIGNIFICANCE IN TIME IN WHICH THEY PLAYED: 1. Van der Hart, 2. Hysen, 3. Johansson, 4. Aldair, c) NATIONAL CAREER: 1. Aldair (exceptional dominance over others), 2. Johansson (despite a relatively weak career), 3.Hysen, 4.Van der Hart (only 5 official matches, all other friendly matches), d) DOMESTIC CLUB CAREER - 1.Hysen, 2.Aldair, 3.Johansson, 4.Van der Hart (I'm still in a dilemma here between him and Johansson), e) INTERNATIONAL CLUB CAREER - 1.Hysen, 2.Aldair, 3.Johansson, 4.Van der Hart, f) MY SUBJECTIVE IMPRESSION - 1.Van der Hart - (in older times between equal players, advantage yet I give quality, and in more modern times, preference goes to careers and trophies), 2.Hysen, 3.Johansson, 4.Aldair. If we score it all now: 1.Hysen, 2.Van der Hart, 3.Johansson, 4.Aldair. I think the playing qualities and careers of: Carlo Parola, Ricardo Carvalho and Sami Hyypia also cannot be ignored.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sami Hyypia is slow and also lack of competitive technique but I agree he was very consistent. How about Bjorn Nordqvist ? Is he considered better player than Ake Johansson ? Pesmiti rate his ability very high but I doubt why did he play for PSV just 3 seasons.

      Delete
  39. Nordqvist is probably the most respected central defender in Sweden. He was of high quality and long-lasting in the national team. I personally would still prefer Hysen. Between Nordqvist and Johansson, the nuances are so small, that whatever you decide you can’t go wrong. My decision would still go to Johansson's side. Hyypia was slow and bad techniques (those players I’ve watched a lot, I judge more by personal judgment), but he was still a significant player in his time. 2 times in the ideal 11 Premier League, team of the year 2001, Liverpool's best player in 2002. Even at the age of 37, he was in the ideal 11 Bundesliga. No success with the national team. That is a disadvantage, but Aldair still did not have a crucial or dominant role in the Brazilian national team. But his successes with Brazil should certainly be counted on. No, of course as some of the more expressive players.

    ReplyDelete
  40. In fact, I also wanted to say that I do not know any information about the quality of Bjorn Nordqvist through any recognition. Except he got "Gulbollen" in 1968, which wasn't too hard. However, Johansen received this award in 1957, when the competition was much stronger. However, it is unlikely that he would have received it if the Swedish internationals had come into consideration. He also received some votes in the "balloon d or" 1963, which again is not the most reliable proof of his quality. Johansson can still be considered in a wider list of the best central defensive players of his generation, which cannot be said for Bjorn Nordqvist. Although of course, on the world stage at the time Bjorn Nordqvist was probably one of
    the strongest competition.

  44. Godin should be 3rd in the second half of the 2010s, Van Dijk only displayed great level in the last 2.5 years of that period
Besides that Cortouis ranking is ridicolous, De Gea should unquestionably be at least number 2, Oblak and Ter Stegen are also clearly superior

For the first half of the 1930s, you list Mirolad Arsenijevic twice, both at center-half and at half-back. Also, you list Zvonimir Boban on the Italy national team, but I think you mean Croatia/Yugoslavia.

  48. I believe Thomas Muller might have a shout for seventh forward in the second half of the 2010s. In hindsight his drop in performance was greatly exaggerated as he had quite good assist and goal numbers per 90 minutes during his off form despite playing badly and he was absolutely world class during the second part of the 2019-2020 season or even since the managerial change. He also had a good 2015-2016 season with a world class first half and international class second half according to kicker even though his form dropped in the end and had the second half of the 2017-2018 season in 2018 where he was was rated as international class by kicker.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Maybe the second half of the 2019-2020 season does not count for the purposeful of the second half 2010's ranking? Either way it would be interesting if the likes of Neuer and Muller were able to keep their current performance level and somehow resurface in the positional ranking list of the Eras after five years of absence.

  50. Sorry regarding Muller i meant him having a shout for eight forward, not seventh

  51. I have read your introduction more closely and it seems that the likes of Muller and Neuer might fit the performances at the border of the era's problem and not have enough qualified seasons, sorry. Still it would be very funny if at least one of the two were able to resurface for the next five years.

Koulibaly alone in the Serie A has been way better, as well as Chiellini despite his injuries.

Furthermore, Bonucci's 17-18 season in AC Milan was abysmal, one of the worst seasons by any "top" defenders that I have witnessed. Milan fans still have nightmares.
