Herbert Chapman is widely regarded as the greatest club manager in the pre-war era. He first took charge as player-manager in 1907 with Northampton Town and turned the club around from the bottom of Southern league within a short space of time. At the time, teams rarely employed tactics of any sort. He set about creating a tactical framework for all his players; he dropped the half backs back to give his forwards more space and draw the opposition defenders out of the penalty area while encouraging his own back line to pass their way out of trouble. Gradually, he created a style of highly-organized, counter-attacking football, which was at odds with the prevailing orthodoxy but nevertheless highly effective. Chapman developed Hudderfield Town from the bottom group to be England champion within 3 seasons. Superlatively, he led Arsenal to win second place just for his first season and won its first trophy in 1931 despite the club wasn’t among the top English club before his era. He became manager for the first time with Netherlands national team in 1910 to set the basis to the team. Then, he moved to organize Austria Wienna for a season. His best club career was at MTK Budapest where he led them won five league titles and seven seasons and helps the club won the World record in amateur football most goals ratio and goal differences ratio. Hogan was very successful in international level when he managed both Switzerland and Austria to win Silver Medal in Olympic Games in two different tournaments. However, he was a co-manager with other two for the Switzerland squad in 1924 Olympic Game. It is still their best achievement ever to date. Hogan helped Aston Villa to win promotion from the second tier to the top tier within two seasons and retired in his third season.

Excellent list. I mostly agree, but I am missing Luis Aragonés. He did not get major titles until 2008, except for an Intercontinental Cup in 1974, but he worked magic for over 30 years in all kinds of teams. He took Mallorca to the Champions League positions, he won the spanish league an several cups with Atlético, he nearly took Valencia to the title, he saved some teams (Oviedo, Espanyol, Betis) from relegation, he took Atlético back to the spanish first division in 2001...A true master.
ReplyDeleteThanks but this list has still not been implemented methodology. The methodology will largely open for Managers who is successful in managing small team depend on the gap he could make based on the team's potential. I'd take Aragones into account and we will see whether he could be made the list.
DeleteI really don't think that Arrigo Sacchi style was defensive.he was against italian traditional playing style because for him it was too defensive..he has modernized italian football like none before
ReplyDeleteI understand his philosophy of tactic is not an extreme defense, condensing central midfield area to support defenders. I still see his tactic is more defensive than equivalent, what would you think ?
DeleteIn my opinion his style is more equivalent than defensive.for example i think that Trapattoni playing style was much more defensive than him but you classified it as equivalent..i know that these are personal points of view but i am italian and in italy Trapattoni is always remembered as a defensive manager while sacchi as a more attacking one.for example capello,Who substituted sacchi in milan, was more defensive than him, playing with desailly in front of defense.with sacchi central midfielders were Ancelotti and rjkaard, able to attack and defend as well
ReplyDeleteOK, that is very interesting. I agree Trapattoni is not more offensive strategy approach than Sacchi. Now I'm implementing methodology in this list and I'll review the tactical style also.
DeleteZagallo has to be the number 39, not the number 43.
ReplyDeleteHe use the notable tactic "The Wingless Wonders" as a navigator of success. However, the club went down to the bottom place in the next season and switched to international career. Ramsey is also known as the only English manager with World Cup title but England disqualified for the 1974 World Cup is also noted as a big failure of his career, also disqualified for the 1964 and 1972 European championship final tournament.
ReplyDeletesports management games
you can update statistics of Guardiola
ReplyDeleteI was wondering why Helmut Schoen has fallen out of the list; if I remember correctly, he used to be ranked very highly. His record certainly speaks for itself.
ReplyDeleteCould you explain the plummeting of Helmut Schoen out of the top 50?
ReplyDeleteSure, Helmut Schoen managed almost only national teams. He managed Sarbrucken in only 1 year. International country matches held much fewer games than club football. Based on Germany's excellent resource, he had a challenge in every two years for major tournaments. Largely different to club manager who confronted a difficult situation week by week.
Delete5. Luis Enrique 87.6 Point : 2015 Bayern Munich (League 1st-OW, Cup 1st-OW, Int.Club 1st-SW) This is a mistake, it should say Barcelona, not bayern. Also, where does Diego Simeone stand? Can he get into top 50 in near future?
ReplyDeleteOK thanks, I have not implemented Diego Simeone but I positive he should replace Guillermo Stabile who I intend to remove as he is considered not a tactical expertise but managed the Argentine team with a ton of superstars. I'll do it in the near future.
DeleteIt's not entirely true as you say that the players of the "Máquina de River" made easier the work of Stábile, in fact of those players the one who was most present in the victories of the South American Championship was Pedernera, and was in only 3 of the 6 titles. And the World Cup of 58, was due to the fact that after the coup d'etat, the leadership of River linked to the military began to pressure the AFA for use their players in the National Team, making them one of the best Argentine teams in history, with Corbatta, Maschio, Angelillo, Sívori, Cruz, ended up dismembered, many went to Italy and didn't participate in 58 ... That Argentina habitually destroyed that Brazil that would finally be the World Champion in Sweden ... remove Stábile by Simeone is an affront to football history (in the same way there are managers who figure only because they are Europeans and work in the current era, one of the most club hegemonic one)...
DeleteZidane needs to be ranked. He has achieved the legendary back-to-back UCL tought impossible by many.,and is having an even more dominant start than Guardiola.
ReplyDeletePep Guardiola
ReplyDeleteThe Failure Point : None
Is this a joke? His Bayern side conceded 5 goals in UCL semi-finals twice in a row.
I had not updated yet. I agree he already has a flaw in his career.
DeleteZidane update to NO.1 please.
ReplyDeleteWhat a joke! As usual from Zidane and Madrid fanboys
DeleteMay have to update Mourinho a bit and add his third league title with Chelsea.
ReplyDeleteAlso, him leaving Chelsea near the relegation zone in 15/16 should be a failure point.
Actually I even have not updated for the last season. I will do when I have time.

DeleteMarcelo Bielsa should be here, otherwise this is just list of managers that managed clubs with best players.
ReplyDeleteI can't see how he is great enough.
DeleteWhat he has done with athletic bilbao and leeds united has really been exceptional considering the quality of those players. I think that you should really research his methods and work. Evaluating managers is definitely hard and of course it's only my opinion that he belongs on this list and I can't prove it. He is adored in his home nation and with fans of clubs he managed. Thanks for sharing. It is interesting list but I think it is hard to make accuracy for best manager of the year in this period as international football was very limited.
DeleteNot one mention of the actual greatest manager of all time time winning a total of 73 trophies during his tenure. That is more trophies than most clubs have won.
ReplyDeleteConfermo quanto detto dall utente italiano riguardo sacchi. Spingeva sempre, in casa e fuori.
